Unistel Medical Laboratories (UML) is a diagnostic genetics laboratory situated at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Stellenbosch University, Tygerberg, South Africa. The Laboratory provides a comprehensive human and animal diagnostic service including cytogenetics, molecular cytogenetics, molecular diagnotics genetics, forensic DNA analysis and DNA paternity testing.
A genetic test is the analysis of human DNA, RNA, chromosomes, proteins, or certain metabolites in order to detect changes related to a hereditary disorder. This can be accomplished by directly examining the DNA or RNA of a gene (direct testing), looking at markers co-inherited with a disease-causing gene (linkage testing), assaying certain metabolites (biochemical testing), or examining the chromosomes (cytogenetic testing).
